Would Maikel Nabil die defending freedom of speech in Egypt?

Free Maikel Nabil Campaign condemns the harsh ruling on a youth blogger who didn’t make any offense, he only expressed his opinion freely. Maikel thought that Egypt after the revolution guarantees him his right to freedom of expression, but he was shocked with the painful reality as he was arrested from his home in 28 March 2011 following an article he wrote on his blog! He was tried very quickly and was sentenced to 3 years in prison with maximum security in than 2 weeks – at the time when all the ones, who corrupted and poisoned the life of Egyptians for the past 30 years, have the right to civil tribunal before their normal judge and have all their rights for a sufficient time to prepare their defense and in an open trial, which are the rights Maikel was forbidden!
Maikel Nabil is a veterinarian, a political activist and an ex-member of the supreme authority in the Democratic Front Party, as well as, he is one of the prominent bloggers since 2006 and participated in the revolution from its first day. He also called for its thoughts through his work in the party, his political activity and his numerous writings. Maikel is now in solitary confinement in El-Marg General prison and he’s on a hunger strike since 23 August, he also started thirst and medicine strike since 30 August objecting the ruling issued against him, asking for his right to freedom and his release. What’s noticeable is the military council pardoned bloggers, writers and other activists who were accused of the same charges and didn’t pay attention to the continuous demands for the release of Maikel Nabil which raises questions about the discrimination Maikel is subjected to.
Maikel suffers of health problems in his heart and blood pressure, which multiplies the risk of the strike on his life. His family and friends weren’t able to see him for more than 2 weeks which greatly raises our concern about his life. That’s why, the prison administration of El Marg General prison carries the responsibility of keeping him alive and not to neglect giving the full medical care for him immediately and urgently. We also ask the military council to quickly and unconditionally release Maikel Nabil Sanad.
It’s worth mentioning that some of the international organizations which are concerned with defending human rights announced on next Friday, 2 September, to be an international day for solidarity with Maikel Nabil Sanad and it made an invitation for protests at different cities around the world. For our part, we ask everyone who is in solidarity for Maikel Nabil as a person and all defenders of human rights, freedom of opinion and expression to be present on Friday, 2 September 2011, in a stand-in in solidarity, from 5 pm till 7 pm in Cairo, in front of Journalists Syndicate at Abdel Khalek Sarwat street and in front of the northern area at Alexandria at the same time.
Additionally, we condemn some of the falsified information which were published in press recently which deliberately defame and erroneously accuse him of treason and working as an agent for the state of Israel, which are all totally unrelated to reality. So, we request journalists to investigate the accuracy of the information which they publish, considering the sensitivity of the situation, as well as, we deny the news story claiming that Maikel visited Israel which was published in Al-Masry Al-Youm in 23 August 2011. Maikel only left the Egyptian land once in his life for a visit to Syria and never visited Israel before.
